Cool cap!

(Competitive Cyclist) October 11, 2011

I gave this product to my guy, Bill, to use in his first 50-mile trail run.
We knew that it was going to be wicked hot (90+) for much of the run, and since we're from the fog belt, it was going to be a shock. We found him an Icefil shirt, and he loved it - so I went hat shopping. I figured if nothing else it would be a mental edge.
I'm not sure how much the fabric "delivers" on its promise to feel a few degrees cooler. It's really a subjective thing. In test runs Bill thought the shirt felt cooler than his normal tech tees. But, again, it's worth a shot, particularly since it's an otherwise decent hat.
The hat fit both of us well. Many "OSFA" hats are snug for his bigger (60cm) head, but it was pretty adjustable. It also provided great sun coverage without being too floppy. No rednecks for me!
The only thing that isn't so great about it - it dries really, really quickly. One thing I learned during this event is that ultrarunners like it WET. Wet shirt, wet hat, wet everything (except maybe socks). At an average pace of 5 mph, you don't get much convective cooling, so you're relying on evaporative cooling. (For cyclists, it's pretty much the opposite - you're moving fast enough that you're making your living off of convection, with just a little evaporation.) With aid stations about an hour apart, Bill spent some of his water "budget" to re-wet the hat.
Bottom line: buy it for sun protection, light color, airy feel, and potential cooling effect - but not if you're happier with a wet head.
