Susan says :Vaude's Tall Bike Gaiters and Drop Knickers are two of my favorite wet weather essentials. I think the Tall Bike Gaiter is simply brilliant. Generously sized, it easily fits over my walkable-tred shoes. There are few things I dislike more than wet feet, so if the road surface is wet, I always don my bike gaiters. The tall height (up to my knee!) prevents road spray off my front tire from wetting out my tights and socks, so my feet stay dry. Also key here is that the velcro closure is in the BACK, so water doesn't work it's way in, as it might if the closure were on the front, as with a pair of backpacking gaiters. Plus the gigantic 3M reflective strip on the back is SUPER visible in dim or dark conditions.
If the rain gets more insistent, I add the Spray Knicker to the ensemble. The garment is well cut in the hip and thigh, so that its trim without binding when I pedal. The knicker keeps my thighs and knees dry, so that rain doesn't wick down the legs of my tights to my socks and shoes. They are long enough that they overlap the top of the Tall Bike Gaiter, so - even in a heavy rain - my legs, socks and feet can stay completely dry. I prefer the knicker/gaiter combination over a pant/bootie combo because 1) I like the freer airflow I get with the knicker. Sometimes rain pants can be a little hot, but with what is essentially a "vent" at the intersection of the knicker & gaiter, there's more airflow to keep me from overheating. And 2) Sometmes rainpants can feel restrictive over the knee as I pedal, whereas with a knicker, I feel like I can pedal more easily with less pulling over the knee.
I've ridden many hundreds of miles with my Drop Knickers and several thousand with my Tall Bike Gaiters. Here in rainy Oregon, I consider them essential to making every wet weather ride a success!
