Susan says :Vaude's Tall Bike Gaiters and Drop Knickers are two of my favorite wet weather essentials. I think the Tall Bike Gaiter is simply brilliant. Generously sized, it easily fits over my walkable-tred shoes. There are few things I dislike more than wet feet, so if the road surface is wet, I always don my bike gaiters. The tall height (up to my knee!) prevents road spray off my front tire from wetting out my tights and socks, so my feet stay dry. Also key here is that the velcro closure is in the BACK, so water doesn't work it's way in, as it might if the closure were on the front, as with a pair of backpacking gaiters. Plus the gigantic 3M reflective strip on the back is SUPER visible in dim or dark conditions.

If the rain gets more insistent, I add the Spray Knicker to the ensemble. The garment is well cut in the hip and thigh, so that its trim without binding when I pedal. The knicker keeps my thighs and knees dry, so that rain doesn't wick down the legs of my tights to my socks and shoes. They are long enough that they overlap the top of the Tall Bike Gaiter, so - even in a heavy rain - my legs, socks and feet can stay completely dry. I prefer the knicker/gaiter combination over a pant/bootie combo because 1) I like the freer airflow I get with the knicker. Sometimes rain pants can be a little hot, but with what is essentially a "vent" at the intersection of the knicker & gaiter, there's more airflow to keep me from overheating. And 2) Sometmes rainpants can feel restrictive over the knee as I pedal, whereas with a knicker, I feel like I can pedal more easily with less pulling over the knee.

I've ridden many hundreds of miles with my Drop Knickers and several thousand with my Tall Bike Gaiters. Here in rainy Oregon, I consider them essential to making every wet weather ride a success!

I have used these a lot

(Avid Cyclist) April 26, 2014

I have been using the gaiters for a year. I communte on my bike year-round. They keep my lower legs and shoes free of road grit and relatively dry on 35-min commutes and longer rides on splashy roads or during downpours. They do not breathe as much as I would like as the skin or tights on my lower legs can be a bit damp and sweaty by the end of the ride. However, "damp" is better than "soaking" and "gritty." I love not having sloshy shoes. I wear waterproof knickers with the gaiters when riding in a downpour. Knickers covering the top edges of the gaiters prevents water that runs down thighs and knees from seeping under the gaiters and down into shoes. I purchased size S to fit my size 6 shoe. Nonetheless, the gaiter's fabric under the toe of the shoe interfered with clicking in and out of pedals. I fixed the problem by cutting away a thin cresent of the fabric to make a little more clearance in front of the cleat-area. Luckily, the fabric is coated so it did not fray along the cut-edge. After this minor adjustment, the gaiters still stay in place over the toe. When donning the gaiters, I have to get the top edges aligned just right or the thick, rough fabric at the velcroed corners chafes the skin at the top of the calf and behind the lower knee. This problem may be related, in part, to my 5'3" stature. I appreciate the additional velco tabs that allow adjustments to accommodate the ankles and shoes of a small person.

Pros
  • Cleans Easily

  • Windproof
Cons
  • Does Not Breathe
  • Needed Adjustment
  • Top Edge Can Chafe

Still brand new

(Avid Cyclist) August 6, 2013

Was dying to try these gaitors out because they look awesome, but the ride wound up with perfect weather and they stayed packed. Pretty good insurance. They appear very well made. Little tight around top of my calf, but I still think I got the right size. Was recommended to get a medium for my women's 11 shoe and seems to be the right call.

Excellent Coverage

I have used these on my bike commute in wet weather. The protection from rain and from water sloshing up from the road surface is great - and I like the reflective striping on the back.

Quality product/ Adjusts for great fit!

(Casual/ Recreational) June 14, 2012

I am taking this product to Germany in Sept. for rainy biking days.
I like that they are longer and will keep my lower legs and clothing from road grit and splash. I believe they will be great for a bit of added warmth like my winter gaiters.

My feet are small, 6.5 and because of the infinite adjustments of the velcro tabs on the top of the foot, calf area and top, they fit well.

The workmanship and fabric are very good quality. Typical for German products. I think the value equals the price.

I am ordering a pair for my husband.

Pros
  • Durable fabric
  • Adjustable for custom fit
  • Comfortable
  • Great workmanship
  • Dry Easily
  • Warm
Cons
  • None so far
