During World War II, over 6 million women from all walks of life worked in factories and at industrial jobs that challenged traditional notions of women's capabilities. Female participation in the workforce ensured American productivity that helped to win the war.
The 1942 song, Rosie the Riveter, provided a nickname for all women who worked in wartime industries and honored the women who exchanged frying pans for overalls, and irons for industrial tools.
