Hi Heather,
I did the same thing a couple of days ago. You're the first post I've
seen! :-) Maybe it would have helped if I had thrown out an intro e-mail
myself!
How long have you been riding? Road or mtn? Where are you from?
As for me, I'm into my third season of dedicated mountain biking. And
suffering from a horrible case of new bike lust!! (I'm presently riding a
'99 GT XCR 3000 - great bike, but too too heavy- got my sights set on a
Titus Loco Moto sometime in the hopefully near future)
I'm in SE Massachusetts, right on the Rhode Island border - lots of really
great technical riding around here. Anyone else on the list in the New
England area?

WOW! Solo 24 hrs??? That's awesome. I'll be wishing you lots of luck!!
:-) I definitely want to try a 24 hr race soon - just need to find some
teammates. But I'm not very speedy, so I plan to enter the "cruiser"
class. Most of my riding is technical terrain at a fairly moderate pace.
I bring my 3 1/2 year old black lab with me and he can go for miles and
miles, as long as the pace is reasonable with lots of water/rest breaks.

Hi Jen,
cool, there are people here!
I live in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, and just started competitive XC
mountain biking in January. I love it. I placed 5th in the State Series
this year, so it made the sport very rewarding. The girl I ride with has
been encouraging me to get a rode bike and start rode riding with her, but I
am just not so sure I want to commit to the sport like that. I really just
enjoy the rec idea. Our ride season runs October - June, so I am taking a
break right now.
I saw a lot of your bike at the races this year. I upgraded from a 31lb
Scwhinn hardtail to a 24.5lb Specialized Stumpjumper Pro FSR XC full
suspension. I can't believe what a kush ride it is after jiggling my
kidneys out on the trail this Winter. And I have no idea what components I
have, I am still learning the lingo. Although I know the Titus is a local
factory bike, and a VERY awesome bike too. My husband had one on demo and
loved it. But he ended up with the Santa Cruz Superlight.
Do you have a training regimen? I'd be interested to share ideas and tips.

Hi Everyone,
I have no idea when this discussion group will be or what the Topics are.
Or,
perhaps we have already started? It is too bad that it could not be live and
bit more personal involvement as it is on AOL. Surely, there must be a Web
Site Room and a time that we can participate in the discussion live instead
of just posting messages. Just a thought. I have seen other Bike discussions
(as I just described) mostly Men sometimes Boys. When the conversation gets
"stupid" or about "Women" I have been able to get some "crowd control" and
get back to the topic of MTB. Laughing, LOL but true. With my nickname being
"Sammy" for Samantha and because I do have the Technical knowledge they
listen to me. However, no one has asked they just assumed I was male because
of the name. Anyway, it is nice to see a group of women forming. By the
way,
I also have "Bike Lust" since 1992, I'm afraid. So, I started building up
Frames for myself---- Roadie turned "Techno Weenie" for MTB.
And Angie, not to scare you, but be careful of the Bears in when you go to
Alberta. Good luck with your ride.
I am from the East Coast of the states, but now live in Canada. I love
Arizona and the New England area for riding. I have just started a photo
collection of my Bikes. My close friends refer to them as "Sammy's Porno
Pics". I currently Ride a K2 4000 RS that I built up myself and also a
Cannondale HardTail, without the Cannondale fork. I love the sport, and it
would be nice to meet some other women to ride with. However, I know I can't
count on that expecially all the way out here. Anyone from Canada here east
of Alberta?

I don't have any set training regimen. I try to get out on my bike at
least 3-4 times a week for 2+ hours at a time, do some trail and/or road
runnig a few times a week, and when I can get there, work in a couple of
days of weight training at the gym. As you can see, this makes for a full
schedule, so I don't get everything in all the time - I just shoot for
being active at least 5 days a week, with 1 or 2 rest days when needed to
avoid overtraining. My ultimate goal is not to compete against anyone but
myself - I want to build my technical riding skills (I'd love to be able to
do wheelie drops! hehehehe) and have a good base of fitness for endurance
activities. Some of my specific goals are to do a 24 hr race, an adventure
race, and an ultra-trailrunning event. But mostly, I just want to enjoy my
time outdoors! And of course, enjoy a few cold Harpoons after doing
so...but that's a whole DIFFERENT topic!

Hi girls,
Glad to see some posting. Just found this website and
signed up a few days ago as well. I just really
started riding on a regular basis this summer. I
signed up for the MS 150 and have been riding on
weekly training rides and just loving it.
Right now I'm riding an old mountain bike, but am
looking to buy a road bike. Although, at this point,
I'm sure I can't get exactly what I want since my
price range is going to be %500 to $700.
I'm in Missouri, anyone else near?
Well, happy riding and nice to see all the posts.

Oh, about the bears and the drunks. Yeah, I do agree you should steer far
away from those people. I just heard of 2 riders running in to one in
Alberta
last summer. One was mauled, but he was looking forward to recovering and
getting back on the bike. They seem to be hungrier here than they are in the
states. Ha Ha, but really I think so.
I just applied for a job in Alberta, I am waiting to hear something from
them.
Keep me posted. No pun intented. i am still not sure how to work this

Hello there,
I'm 45 this year and have been fairly active until about 8 months ago when
joint pain set in and slowed me down. Yes, the mid life crises are here
with life, work, divorce, children, body changes, and I usually swim, walk,
run and road ride to counter the negative effects. The riding specially
made me feel the best and now I would do well to make it out there once a
month for a 5 mile ride. I need the strength and motivation I hope to find
in this list. I find it sooooo hard to get started back. Is cycling good
for people with arthritis?
I look forward to reading about your experiences and support. I wanna do a

I keep an extra wheel set with mountain tires for my bike, but the

Recumbents are pretty cool - I've been seriously considering a tandem

Ava, I never rode a bike in my life until last October, at the age of 54
years, my husband bought me a rode bike. I live by a 27 mi paved trail and
started to ride daily. Boy, it was unbelievably tough for the first
month---thought I would die. Everyone passed me, and I hurt (my knees
especially). But, nothing can get the better of me and I kept riding and
enjoying freedom more every ride.
However, my knees did get the better of me, and my doctor said over-use.
Appointment with a professional bike fitter saved my life. All the pain and
difficulty was not me----my bike was way too wrong for me. I purchased a
Terry Symmtery and have been flying since May. I fly. Every day, I fly.
Now my husband bikes to work, we have purchased a tandem for the weekends,
and I am now seriously considering track racing.
All due to the desire to just "bicycle" down the trail, for a little
exercise and freedom!

I started at age 45. Menopause hit me hard and I didn't want to give in.
For me joint pain was part of the early process of "the change:" It's
mostly behind me now. I started with a Terry Symetry and upgraded to a
custom built Serrota Legend Ti this spring. I remember my first 50 mile
bike ride! I was so surprised at myself. I knock off centuries each
weekend now with about 8k of climbing. No big deal .... AND I just did the
DEATHRIDE. For those of you who don't know this is an endurance event in
the Sierras. 129 miles, 16k of climbing in one day. 5 mountain passes. I
felt great afterwards. BTW: I turned 50 last April. I think cycling is
the best thing for women our age who are not ready to join the porch
sitters.

Hi,
Just got back from the cottage in Ontario and opened my e-mail. Excuse me
while I digress here. A list? Sounds like a plan. I could use it when I go
back to the states to visit family and friends. Since, I doubt any of you
ladies will be dropping by in my neck of the woods up here unless you are on
your way to see the Polar Bears in Churchill, MB. which is a few hundred
miles from where I am living now. (LOL-laughing) I just moved up here a
year
ago. I know the most of the trails in New Jersey & Florida but not to many
here yet. It is really hard finding women to ride with here.
I also see we have a few people from NJ and Florida. Hey, where were you
when
I was living in NJ and Florida trying to start a women's MTB club? Just
kidding; gee, what luck. So, Angie, you are starting a web site? Great! I
can
hardly wait until your up & running. Have you by chance looked in to a live
women's cycling Internet forum? Not to complain, but I seem to be getting
tons of duplicate e-mail from this forum and it is a bit overwhelming and
confusing to me. I know a live Internet forum is possible through AOL and
other Internet sites that have this forum. Instant messenger is free in
Canada and the USA and from what I understand anyone can hook up live with
this. It might not be a bad idea on occassion if there is an interest.

Hello everyone! I am a mtb and road rider from Fort Lauderdale, FL. I am
sure everyone is thinking- mtb in Florida? It's not as fun as riding on
real mountain trails but we have some parks that have built trails so you
can experience it a little bit. Anyway, I have 2 questions:
1-I am looking for this ballcap from Precaryous clothing company. It says
"Biker Chick" and has an embroidered yellow baby chicken sitting on a
bicycle seat on the front. I of course waited too long and now I can't find
it. Has anyone seen it at their local bike shop or seen it on-line? I
would really like to have this hat. I used to have the sides of my head
shaved but now I am letting it grow out and it is at a very bad length now.
I NEED a hat to cover it up! Argh!
2-I am going to attend a women only Dirt Camp in Moab, Utah in the beginning
of October. It teaches you mtb skills and how to be more confident with
your bike. Has anyone ever attended this or does anyone know anything about
it? Please let me know.
Thanks for reading. Happy riding to everyone! Dulcy Misotti

However, I don't know much about other types of bikes and other brands. I

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

I'm 46 and I've had lupus for seven years. Yes, riding is excellent for
people with arthritis because it doesn't jar your joints. It strengthens
the
muscles surrounding the joint.
A word of caution - if you're just starting out again - don't try to push
big
gears at first. The strain will be felt in your lower back and knees. Just
spin & get your body used to the motion again.
One sympton of lupus is crushing fatigue. I find that when I get out & ride
- even if for just a little bit - it really helps. You'd think that
physical
activity would make you more tired but it is just the opposite.
Good luck

I have compiled a list of all the websites that I found in my search for
mountain bike camps. I got a couple from Oxygen(woman's weight lifting-not
Oprah's) magazine, July '01 issue. The only problem is a lot of them have
already happened and you would have to wait until spring to go. Some are
still offering classes up until November though. ok here is the list:
These are all the ones I have found. Some obviously look better than
others. I am going to the Dirt Camp one, but I was also interested in the
Spokeswomen one though timing did not work out. The Spokeswomen one was the
one the Oxygen mag person attended and did a daily journal on. The only
drawback is that they can be rather pricey, but just call it your vacation
and it seems better. I don't know though. Just weigh the options- cruise
and suntan or riding and bruises- I think I'll still take the bruises- I
get a suntan when I am riding. Best of both worlds. Hope this helps!
Happy riding! Dulcy
